London, United Kingdom [5 July 2024] – Spectators witnessed one of the most dramatic finishes seen at an Aramco Team Series presented by PIF event, with Leona Maguire clinching the first win for an Irishwoman on the Ladies European Tour (LET), and Team Nadaud winning a three-hole play-off.
The imperious Leona Maguire closed the final round with a phenomenal eagle on the 18th to finish one shot ahead of the rest of the field, on a day that saw the lead swap hands multiple times.
This came following a tricky hybrid shot played just in front of a fairway bunker, with the Irish star sending a precise strike to within five feet of the hole, and offering the chance to leapfrog Spain’s Maria Hernandez, who had the clubhouse lead at seven-under-par.
Hailing patience as the key and not giving up, Maguire expressed, “The motto for today was to stay patient and just not to give up, knowing that there were some chances coming down the stretch.
“I was trying to be patient, but it really did test my patience right until the very end but that's a prime example of not giving up and really trying to finish as strong as possible.”
Maria Hernandez, who came so close to her first LET win in 14 years after two blemish free rounds, finished one shot behind Maguire in second place, whilst Alison Lee, despite eight birdies in her final round, fell short by two shots along, with home favourite Georgia Hall.
On the team side, it took three play-off holes to split Team Nadaud and Team Hall, with the captain’s opening the playoff each recording an eagle – setting the tone for a battle for the ages.
The Frenchwoman’s quality shone through not only to win, but to sink two birdies on the final holes to rein in the returning Team champion Hall, after the Englishwoman stuck it within putting range.
“To be honest, I don't even know how I handled this,” said captain Nadaud, who was able to put her nerves aside to win her first team title on the series.
“I was so nervous on the first tee, I was afraid I wouldn't hit the ball! I was trembling so much on the first tee shot on 18, but my caddy was really helpful, keeping me breathing and focused on the process.”
Earlier in the day, Agathe Sauzon of France produced what can only be described as an incredible round of golf, carding four birdies on the front nine and five on the back to for a total of 66, helping her finish sixth overall.
Elsewhere, individual champions Maguire’s compatriot Lauren Walsh shot seven birdies, along with a sensational eagle on 18 to finish up T3 by close of play.
Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – London may have concluded, but there are two more elevated prize fund events on the LET calendar, Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – Riyadh and one yet to be announced.
